Might want to check Character Creation again

Post  Admin on Tue Jun 18, 2013 9:20 pm

I would like to announce that there is a new character sheet in the Character Creation part of this forum. It contains new things to update your character. If you have any questions about it just post them here. There are new requirements and new caps to stats along with stat changes so I am looking forward to seeing whatever changes you make to improve your characters.Very Happy

Just a quick question, where is this hiding? I'd rather not rebuild my character half way to find out I'm referring to the wrong post. xD

I was informed that there is a problem with the stat numbers. a character at lv 1 is terrible only able to have 41 % of the stats and thus bieng very weak, and adversely a fully lved character only has about 65 % of the stats and are still weak so i am making a change and giving an extra 20 points at lv 1 for a total of 56 - 60 points based on if you have classes etc

Yea I am adding to your points so that your characters are not horrible throughout the game especially at the beginning. so yea now you get 56 - 40 points to work with so your stats section needs to have a minimum of 56. sorry I suddenly changed it I just do not want you guys stats to mess you up with your abilities. When I checked it I noticed that any character would have several negatives and maybe 2 possitives and at max level they would not be much better. So I decided to add some points so that you would be better early on and in the long run and hopefully not have so much negative aspects to your character. I hope that I did not inconvenience you to much I was just trying to improve the gameplay.

Just check the character creation guide to see that the only change is the minimum points you need so not much of a difference.

It's cool, it just hastened what I wanted to do with Techk a little bit, and I've already updated him. Smile I still for some reason can't think of/find a mentor for my character though, are there any mutants currently in the X-men that have to almost constantly control their powers or have shape shifting abilities? I think those would work better than just picking someone at random.

Actually there is one that springs to mind though i am not sure if he is still in our earth in continuity his name is morph his earth 616 counterpart is changeling who is dead right now. There is Mercury but she is a student so idk if that is ok with you to pick a student for your mentor. Morph is known to be a master shapeshifter with an even worse sense of humor that Tech. Pranking allies at times and mocking villains as he kicks thier but. He even beat Magneto solo when he turned into a football field and lured him there with a part of himself shaped as himself and beating Magneto as the area had no metal due to it all bieng a part of Morph. So I would recommend him in my opinion I just found out he is part of the Exiles a team that goes throughout the multiverse dealing with issues that can cause a universe to potentially collapse so he would be popping up around this universe soon if not already as what you are dealing with as the main villain of my forum threatens all of reality in both the marvel and dc universes.

I did a bit of reading up on Morph and I think he'd be a great mentor! However if it's ok with you I'd like for Techk to possibly spar with Mercury as well for Techk to learn to use his body in more mechanical ways rather than just changing his form from person to person and break a sarcasm-o-meter with his and Morph's conversations XD

yea np in fact in story I could say she could be looking to you for advice on how to be better at what she does or to have it so that you both can learn from each other. as for morph he is apparantly like clay and able to shape into anything not just people to the point where he is able to transfor into an entire baseball stadium. so yea he would be very helpful in teaching you about your shapeshifting and about your humor and how to costructively use it. so yea it is all good.

Cool, so Techk would technically be a mentor too? Would stand to some reason as a Teacher at the school Smile

Re: Might want to check Character Creation again

Post  jamwalsh on Mon Jun 24, 2013 1:54 pm

Hey admin quick theory on what to do with these stat regulation concerns. I know there's been some dispute on where to draw the line on stat points, some say there are too many, some say there aren't enough but I don't think that is the real problem here. The real problem I think is with the crippling high amount of compression put on the modifiers by the low number's limitations.

Firstly, I would like to point out the extreme's both the Marvel and DC universes can reach and still leave the gray area, while there is quite a lot of it, heavily populated. For instance, compare Superman to Blob to an MIB bug, while all possess high strength levels with superhuman strength, their limits are widely and unevenly different. The point is your 7 point range isn't nearly accurate enough to do their true capabilities justice. I therefore highly suggest rewriting your database to incorporate much higher modifier point system in the double or possibly even triple digits. In turn, each point would be worth considerably less than it once was in terms of game context, but as long as modifiers are to the nearest whole number, the system will be much more difinitive and accurate. If you have your heart set on this 12 point stat cap, I suggest you at least try the 11 point range with the lowest modifier at -5 and highest at 5. It's slightly more accurate than the 7 point range but I still reccomend you take it further than that.

Secondly, there is a "power creep" issue I would like to discuss. Limiting yourself strictly to the stat points will determine every single character as difinitevely better or worse at certain things than any other character you compare them to making initial stats and level progression too important and focused upon, and that tends to discourage newcomers from joining as they'd always start out difinitively weaker than the veteran pc's in every way. Personally, I've always seen the super powers as the apples and oranges comparison that could be often disputed but never truly determined as to which is better or worse. The super power concept is trancendental to the traditional stats. It is with that take on the game in mind that I suggest that powers not be influenced at all by the traditional stats. for example: a character with super strength can have a low strength stat but disregard it for the super power or have super strength influence strength rather than the other way around.

I welcome input and judgement on these suggestion as long as explanations thereof are also given.
Jamwalsh.

Re: Might want to check Character Creation again

Post  Dusk on Mon Jun 24, 2013 3:25 pm

-sigh- I'll have to reupdate again... and again...Razz

I have to agree with Jamwalsh on the stat thing. The system you had was pretty good. Starting with those "low" points was okay because after all, having your character grow is an important factor. It gives me and other players more incentive to send their characters out on missions. After all, this doesn't have to be a contest between players. It's about developing character, having fun and telling a story together.

I am confused about another point that Jamwalsh brought up and I think a lot of you people have probably thought as well. If your character has super strength as a super power is there really any incentive into having it, if you have a high strength stat? It's not only just strength but, genius intellect and super senses. When it comes to the stat aspect, they just seem totally useless. I'd say it's best to eliminate them and make a table of what counts as super strength.

ALL that aside (this stuff is just trivial), the main problem on this site is the stem of 90% of our problems with stats. I don't mean to be inconsiderate, I like the forum but I get discouraged to post sometimes. Now, please understand that this is not a persoanl attack on you as an admin. Anyone can tell you that you've put a lot of effort and thought into your forume. In fact, I'm not sure how you do it. Very Happy However, I find that I get overwhelmed with the difficulty level. granted, I know having it being challenging is a plus. However, it feels like it's impossible to win and it's not like it's the final boss or anything. It's just the first mission.

My Rant XP:

Ex) The Avenger's day mission

First of all, my overall oppinion of this mission until I got near the end (which I'm currently at). However, in thee very first mission Necelis and Dusk... actually before Dusk had a chance to even start the mission. They ran into...how many supervillains? Then.... they ran into more...and more.... Don't quote me on this but, they duo faced over a dozen supervillians...just the two of them (there were some hereos that 'helped' them but they might as well have... the other 'heroes' did crap all but that maybe to bad rolls). After all this, the building is on the verge of exploding and then Captain America shows up.

At first, I was really happy and relieved. Dusk and Necelis put up a damn good fight, they've nearly died a few times. Dusk has a broken arm, Necelis has been shot and partially turned into stone. They basically would look like they've been through hell and back. there are like 4 or 5 villains left and it was going to be a really close race. I wasn't sure if I could do it. Then, I was like.... thank GOD! Captain America is here!.......

Me: Neutral .....he's evil isn't he?

Admin's response-Twisted Evil

Necelis and Dusk: TT_____TT

I'm pretty sure if he was just normal entity of Captain America, he could very well just beat the entire room by himself. But.... no.... He had Hulk's gamma radiation, thor's magic around of him and he might as well be on steroids too at this point. I reallly didn't know what to do at this point. His stats are all maxed out. I mean... Superman didn't have crap on this guy.

Granted you had the good and the bad guys make a temporary alliance to take care of Captain america but, Captain America is currently bashing all of their heads like a boss. I don't even know what the hell is going on there are bullets, lasers and things flying everywhere. Captain America doesn't even care... he's too busy reflecting on the past. I'm just incredibly confused and overwhelmed. The thing is though.... this is the first mission that's what I have a problem with. It's just wayyyyy too much for first level characters.

In summary, don't think about increasing the stats just so we can keep up with the enemies you throw at us. Lower the difficulty rating instead and tone it down. I realize you want to show us all this cool stuff and I appreciate that but we need to be able to breathe too.

Re: Might want to check Character Creation again

Post  jamwalsh on Mon Jun 24, 2013 5:25 pm

Okay, I'd like to start by summarizing my original point: it's not that the stats or modifiers are too low (although before they were) and there have been signs of the Admin learning his lesson with the previously erratic difficulty (though he still has a ways to go) what I was really saying is we need to operate on a smaller scale (we're on metres now, we need to operate on centimetres) because the capacity of what a single modifier can do is too high, the difference of one point can be devastating now.

I feel for ya Dusk, I really do. My first mission Nebula was near fataly irradiated and is expected to either treat it or die by the next mission and Nyako was fused with a robotic hand on a molecular level, whole vitals were ripped out during that treatment. there is no doubt that this was too much.

finally the concept of stat disregard for powers was to make growth and development of characters non-linear to ensure that while disputes of character quality raged on, there could be no real answer as to which character is difinitevely better. Additionally the incorporation of non-super minions (which I have yet to see) would ensure with out the power/stat separation, that their stats would have to be abysmally low to make any sense. Anyway, thanks for saying your piece, you make sense, but I feel I have to stand my ground on this one.

James i agree the missions are a bit to overkill at times :/ like...it was clear the only reason he did that to nyako to was cuz she couldnt be touched :/ so it was pretty much a planned kill on my character o.O im hoping to never see that happen again. As for the stats i think that the admin should keep them to what they were when he first updated them and than earn experience points as we level after missions. That to me sounds fair enough.

actually Admin agreed stats were too low after some math. We figured out that at at the highest level when he stops letting you get stronger, you'd have 60 stat points to work with a grand total of 65% or barely over half of the maximum that's good for down the road somewhere but if that's what's waiting for us at the very end, I can't help but feel a little bit cheated.

Re: Might want to check Character Creation again

Post  Admin on Tue Jun 25, 2013 12:15 am

ok after seeing the feedback i have gotten i will plkace a poll on wether you want to have a maximum of 65 % stats or a maximum of 80 % stats. based on that i will make a decision and as for the difficulty the idea was to show how the crime wave had gotten out of control and to make your characters feel needed to try to stem the tide. as for the entity itself i will concide that placing them in these missions was indeed the wrong move. After these missions are done as will be proven by the x-men xamples mission there will be only one or 2 enemies or 1 team to deal with from now on. I will even implement this with the entity itself. The idea of the entity was to show that without teaming up with villains you do not stand a chance but admittingly it was overkill after the initial mission. The a new day missions set after these 1st events will also be lowered in difficulty in fact the 1st one has no initial attacker and the players will be dealing with only 1 agressor later on (not an entity) and be with allies. I apologize for any and all inconveniences and hope that you will appreciate the change of pace with the newer missions.
